A study in South Wales shows that the drug sildenafil can be used safely and effectively for patients who are not fully satisfied with the results of their erectile dysfunction (ED) or premature ejaculation (PE) medications.

In a study of over a million men over the age of 40, researchers from the University of Cardiff have found that, in general, sildenafil is the most effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) and is also used to treat PE. The men who took sildenafil were about 5 times more likely to have an erection (ED) than those who took placebo. The researchers also found that men who took sildenafil had a higher rate of ejaculation, as well as reduced time to ejaculation.

“Sildenafil has been shown to be highly effective in treating the symptoms of erectile dysfunction and PE,” said Professor Tom Lomelow, Director of the Sexual Medicine Research Centre in Swansea, and Chief Executive Officer for the University of Swansea.

“This shows that men who take sildenafil are less likely to suffer from PE and that the effects of sildenafil are far more significant than those of other treatments for ED.”

Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor and the active ingredient is Viagra. The drug was approved by the European Medicines Agency in 1998 for treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and is available as a generic medication.

The study found that men who took sildenafil for a long time (greater than five years) had a greater chance of getting an erection (ED) than those who took placebo. This was due to an increased time to ejaculation which was about half that of the men who took sildenafil, and was found to be the longest.

Men taking sildenafil had a faster onset of action and a lower incidence of side effects compared with men who took placebo. This was also the same for men who had never taken the drug and those who had taken it in the last 3 months of the year.

“This is the first study to show that sildenafil can be safely used as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.”

Professor Lomelow said that while the study found that men who were not fully satisfied with their erections (ED) or ejaculating (PE) drugs were about 5 times more likely to suffer from PE than those who took placebo, the results of the study did not show that treatment with sildenafil was superior to that of placebo for this group of patients.

“The results do not support the use of sildenafil for treatment of premature ejaculation and are not consistent with the results of the research which found that the drug helped to delay ejaculation in a placebo-controlled trial.”

“In addition, the study did not show that the drug was better than placebo in controlling for other known risk factors such as age, smoking status, drinking status, obesity and blood pressure.”

The study also showed that sildenafil did not have any side effects in the men who took the drug, with the exception of nausea, headache and flushing.

Professor Lomelow said that the data was interesting and reassuring and that it was important to study men who were taking sildenafil to see if the drug was the same for them as for the men who were not fully satisfied with their erections.

“The results of the study do not support the use of sildenafil for treatment of premature ejaculation and are not consistent with the results of the research which found that the drug helped to delay ejaculation in a placebo-controlled trial.”

“Sildenafil is the only PDE5 inhibitor that has been shown to be highly effective in treating the symptoms of erectile dysfunction and PE.
